W.S. Darley Police Equipment catalog, 1961
“Do we get the ‘Ohio Special’ or ‘The Peacemaker’? Decisions, decisions.”
So somebody had to write compelling copy to help the police force make decisions. One is especially good for quelling riots. Another was adopted by a prison system, demonstrating its effectiveness. A third is small enough for vest pockets and so is better for detectives. Just like you might describe fine clothing or kid’s toys, the Darley catalog enthusiastically, even lovingly, described the different clubs, handcuffs, straight jackets, body bags, lie detectors, guns, badges, and other law enforcement tools. Zoom in to read the copy, and we’ll come back to other pages in the future.
Incidentally, W.S. Darley was founded in 1908 with their Their primary focus on firefighting equipment. in 2017 they are still very much in business, still a family business, and still sending out catalogs!
