Penney's Fall/Winter Catalog, 1969
And now J.C. Penney has filed for bankruptcy. Shed a tear – the era of the department store mail order giants is well and truly behind us.
Let's look back to happier times, shall we? Step back half a century, when all was golden & groovy, and Penneys (and Sears and Wards) ruled the roost.
How groovy were the end of the 60s? Check out these mad paisley pantsuits, with suede-leather vests and t-strap sandals. Quite the combination, because why not? And these hipster kids clothes, worn by enlightened, recently-integrated teenagers. Hip but non-threatening – even the drummer. Right on, Brother! Right on, Comrade!
Meanwhile, Mom has whipped up her kitchen into a veritable palace of organization. (Perhaps quarantine gave her the time to do it.) In any case it looks like she didn't break a sweat, and now she's damn proud of the results, showing off in heels and a cup of coffee, with every single kitchen drawer open. There's undoubtably a card file somewhere with everything cross-indexed. Even the single dropped flower has dropped artfully. And look- those ubiquitous 70s colors, gold and avocado, have made an early guest appearance.
Finally, peek into the living room, which features a jet-settee in plaid fabric and leather-like vinyl, sitting on a red shag rug. Perfect for relaxing. The lamps are plexiglas, and that awesome grandfather clock is…well not your grandfather's grandfather clock.
Or maybe it is. Maybe your grandfather bought one. Maybe you still have it, in all it's dated glory. You know, I have a plan that might rescue Penney's. Put ALL this stuff up for sale at auction. This is some seriously awesome time-capsule material. You could make a fortune!
