Why is this woman smiling? Perhaps because “a career as a Tupperware dealer is exciting and rewarding!” That was the promise first formulated in 1948, and (surprisingly to some) still being made today. The promise might seem as dated as the hairstyle on the back cover of this 1977 catalog, but think about it. Tupperware did give generations of women a taste of a life outside the daily traditions of cleaning and kitchens and kids – opening new possibilities for “experiencing a personal satisfaction and growth as an individual.” (Zoom in to read the aspirational copy.)
And it continues to do so. (Indonesia now sells more Tupperware than any other country.) Perhaps not in these especially green 70’s-era containers, and perhaps no longer found in your local White Pages phone book, but still offering practical and useful solutions — even if they mostly help women in the kitchen.
